    The Chief Inducement? The Idea of Marriage as Friendship.R. Abbey & D. J. D. Uyl - 2002 - Journal of Applied Philosophy 18 (1):37-52.
A combination of social forces has thrown marriage into question in westernised societies at the end of the millennium. This uncertainty creates space for new ways of thinking about marriage. In this context, we examine the idea of marriage as friendship. We trace its genealogy in the work of Mary Wollstonecraft, John Stuart Mill and Harriet Taylor and then subject it to critical scrutiny using some of Michel de Montaigne’s ideas. We ask how applicable the ideal of higher friendship is (...)

    Archaism in Terence.J. D. Craig - 1927 - Classical Quarterly 21 (2):90-94.
It is sometimes assumed too rigorously that what distinguishes the language of Terence from that of Plautus is its modernity; that antiquated forms and expressions, common enough in the older dramatist , were all but completely absent in the younger . On this assumption a faulty Terence line is due simply to mistranscription, and the method of emendation is the same as would be employed on any MS. incorrectly copied in Carolingian times from an archetype now lost.

    Note on Terence, Andria 532.J. D. Craig - 1926 - Classical Quarterly 20 (3-4):200-.
The traces of real, that is, ancient, rival versions of Terence's lines are not so pronounced as of Plautus' lines. Professor Lindsay has drawn attention to a possible instance at Hec. 468 . Another seems to be Andr. 532 , if I am right in supposing that the text used by Donatus had ipsum Chremem. A trace of the variant survives in the unmetrical δ-setting ipsum obuiam Chremem DGL. The text of the other minuscule MSS. has ipsum obuiam. A is (...)

    Terence Quotations in Servius Auctus.J. D. Craig - 1931 - Classical Quarterly 25 (3-4):151-.
In dealing with excerpts from Terence in the Servian Commentary on Virgil I deferred consideration of the material found only in the enlarged Commentary, on the ground that, if any difference of quality or character should appear in this material, it must be kept distinct from the work of Servius.

    Filosofia e storia della filosofia. [REVIEW]J. D. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (4):725-725.
The essays collected in this book, which deal with aspects of the philosophy of Plato, Abelard, Aquinas, and Kant, are intended to uphold the "eternally present tradition of Hellenic-scholastic thought" in the midst of the present philosophical crisis. Despite the probing insights, the reader frequently has the impression that the elaborate dialectic obscures issues.--J. D.

In this concise volume, the author sets himself several tasks. He attempts to provide a general introduction to Nietzsche for educated readers, or for students in need of a reliable summary. Furthermore, he wishes to rescue Nietzsche from the distortions to which he has been subjected as a result of decades of controversy as well as the use and abuse of him by interested parties. Finally, he desires to depict the way Nietzsche "really was" in both his life and his (...)

  31. Adam Smith on Friendship and Love.Jr: Douglas J. Den Uyl and Charles L. Griswold - 1996 - Review of Metaphysics 49 (3):609-638.
THE CENTRALITY OF "SYMPATHY" to Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments points to the centrality of love in the book. While Smith delineates a somewhat unusual, technical sense of "sympathy", his actual use of the term frequently slips into its more ordinary sense of "compassion" or affectionate fellow feeling. This no doubt intentional equivocation on Smith's part helps suffuse the book with these themes, to the point that, without much exaggeration, one could say that the Theory of Moral Sentiments is (...)

    Superconductivity below 20 K in heavily electron-doped surface layer of FeSe bulk crystal.J. J. Seo, B. Y. Kim, B. S. Kim, J. K. Jeong, J. M. Ok, Jun Sung Kim, J. D. Denlinger, S. -K. Mo, C. Kim & Y. K. Kim - unknown
A superconducting transition temperature as high as 100 K was recently discovered in one monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO3. The discovery ignited efforts to identify the mechanism for the markedly enhanced Tc from its bulk value of 8 K. There are two main views about the origin of the Tc enhancement: interfacial effects and/or excess electrons with strong electron correlation. Here, we report the observation of superconductivity below 20 K in surface electron-doped bulk FeSe. The doped surface layer possesses all (...)
